Our Family History
Our Story
The James Churchill Glove Company traces its roots to the 1890s, when James Churchill began selling crockery and tinware door to door from a horse-drawn wagon. During that time, money was scarce, and he once traded crockery for raw deer hides—a deal that initially seemed unwise. However, after having the hides tanned, Churchill handcrafted gloves that quickly became his best-selling product. Encouraged by the demand, he continued making gloves and sourcing more hides.
In 1897, Churchill opened his first glove-making factory. By 1904, the business had grown enough for him to purchase a larger facility in a former dry goods store.
In 1932, following James Churchill’s passing, his son Niles took over the business, expanding operations and establishing a new branch that remains under family ownership today.
Now, James Churchill Glove Company is one of the oldest continually operating businesses in Centralia, Washington.
